Legally blind boxer Anthony Mundine vows to fight on

SYDNEY, Australia - WBA champion Anthony Mundine, who says he is legally blind in one eye, will fight for the undisputed world super-middleweight title next year.

"I don't need two eyes to beat them," Mundine said Thursday. "I'll fight with one eye."

Mundine, 32, suffered impairment to his sight when he infected his left eye two months ago after using his tongue to clean a contact lens.

He underwent surgery to remove a growth behind the eye and has since been treated with steroids and antibiotics.

"My vision is not great - maybe 40-50 per cent - which is pretty much legally blind at the moment," Mundine said. "It's not sore but there's still a bit of cloudiness in the eye."

Mundine, who last defended his super middleweight title against Argentina's Pablo Zamora Nievas in June, said he is determined to carry on with his career.

He said his priority is to fight Denmark's Mikkel Kessler next year.

The undefeated Kessler, who outpointed Mundine in a WBA title defence at Sydney in June 2005, is scheduled to fight unbeaten WBO champion Joe Calzhage in Cardiff on Nov. 3.

"I'm the only guy that's got the tools to beat Kessler, and he knows it, and hopefully I can get the fight in next year, with God's will," Mundine said.

"All I need is for my eye to be about 60 per cent," he said. "If I can see a silhouette under them lights in my left eye, I feel that I can still become what I have always desired."

This article about Anthony Mundine relates to our discussions on blindness in several ways. This article is about this 32 year old WBA champion from Sydney, Australia who is legally blind in one eye due to a contact accident. In class we talk about how being blind you can still do whatever you want as long as you have the motivation to do it. Anthony Mundine relates immensely to this idea. Anthony knew he had this disability and did not wont to give up. "I don't need two eyes to beat them." Mundine has stated this which shows how he did not let his eye keep him back from doing anything. This relates to our class discussions because it shows how he is a human being just doing what he can not letting anything hold him back.

The Anthony Mundine article relates to our class discussions because this article shows alot about the human condition. Anthony became legally blind in one eye after cleaning his contact with his tounge. This did not stop him from Boxing. He says "If I can see a silhouette under them lights in my left eye, I feel that I can still become what I have always desired." This shows how Anthony is determined to do something and he will do it. This Relates to the human condition because if people want something they don't quit, they work hard and keep going.

Anthony Mundine is legally blind in one eye, but that does not stop him from going on with his life. Our class discussions on blindness have included how blindness relates to knowledge, and how when someone is not born with a disability and gets it later in life, it will be harder for them. For Anthony, he was not born blind. This makes it extremely hard for him because before his contact lens mishap, he was looking out at the world through two eyes, and not he only has one. "Mundine, who last defended his super middleweight title against Argentina's Pablo Zamora Nievas in June, said he is determined to carry on with his career." This quote from the article proves that even though Anthony cannot see through one eye, he still is not willing to give up his career and his life.

The article about the boxer Anthony Mundine very much relates to our class discussions. Blindness should never hold anyone back of fulfilling their true dreams in life. Hellene Keller never let that happen. Anthony Mundine wouldn't give up and still believed, he could fight with the best boxers in the nation. He didn't argue with the disability or keep denying it. He took it in and fought through it. Disabilities should never hold anyone back of their dreams. In anthony Mundine's case, this is very true.

This article is similar to what we have been reading about in The Miracle Worker because just like Helen, Mundine cant see. Even though it is only in one eye for Mundine he is still struggling to be able to box and win the title of world super-middlewieght. Helen has grown up blind and that is something Mundine is not used to yet they still face similar challenges. This problem of sight causes a big difficulty and prevents them from being normal people and doing what they want. Helen would like to be a normal person and be able to talk and se like a normal person but is unable. Mundine wants to win that title but is not sure if he will be able to even though he really wants to. This is all because Helen and Mundine are blind.

The passage on Anthony Mundine relates to our discussions in class in many ways. Since he is blind he does have a harder time doing what he wants than most people but he is still fighting for what he loves to do. Like Helen they both are trying to keep going and each trying preserver. These stories are here to teach us that even if something terribly wrong happens to us, if we still have the will and motivation we need we can achieve the same goals if we were without these problems. People could do what they dream if they try hard enough only for some that struggle takes more to overcome.

This article relates to our discussion on blindness in many ways. Anthony Mundine wants to continue doing something he loves even though he has gone legally blind in one eye. An example relating to this would be in the Miracle Worker. Helen has never had the ability to hear, see or talk. Even though she has never done these things you may think then she can not miss them. However, Helen most likely has an understanding that the way she was born is not “normal.” As members of a society, everyone pretty much all wants the same thing and that is to be accepted. Maybe to Helen being accepted is being able to see, hear and speak and possibly being accepted means being the winner of a fight to Anthony Mundine. So whether or not Mundine can see perfect he plans to fight and be the best he can be just like Helen wishes she could.

The story of Anthony Mundine can be easily compared with the life story of Helen Keller. Anthony is considered legally blind in one of his eyes due to infection. This is very similar to Helen due to the fact that she became both blind and deaf as a result of an illness as a baby. Even though both cases are not exactly the same both Helen and Anthony fought through their disabilities, they would not let anyone stop them. They were both strong willed and did not see their disability as a handicap. They each did whatever they could though to get their lives as normal as anyone else’s.

The article of boxer Anthony Mundine does relate to our class discussions of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. Anthony Mundine is legally blind in his left eye, but that is not stopping him from continuing his goals in life. His goal is to continue professional boxing, and that relates to how Helen Keller was able to overcome her challenges. She was born blind and deaf, she was like an animal, trapped in her body. Anthony and Helen, both are doubted by their friends, family, and society. Helen was the first one to show no matter how severely disabled someone is, it is possible to achieve in life. Anthony is a some what a modern Helen, he is half- blind, and boxing is a tough and dangerous sport. However he is still normal as any other boxers in his league. If only more people back in Helen’s time would believe she can be as normal as anyone else. Maybe some people do not think Anthony is capable of fighting, but he still has those who do believe in him as Annie Sullivan believed in Helen.

The Anthony Mundine article relates to our class discussions about blindness because it shows how a young man became blind in one eye after an accident, but this didn’t stop Mundine from fulfilling his goals in life. This article relates to the book The Miracle Worker because Helen Keller, who has neither the ability to see or to hear, kept on fighting to succeed in life. Helen understood that she will never be normal like others but she tries to succeed in life to be accepted by society. Mundine believes he still could fight the most competitive boxers there are to fulfill his desire to become the champion he has always dreamed of.

The article about Anthony Mundine relates to our class discussions on blindness. During class we talked about how when someone is blind, they have to have the motivation in order to do something or else they will most likely jsut give up on what they want to do. Anthony Mundine became blind from cleaning his contact lens with his tongue. Although he became blind, he still wanted to fight Denmark's Mikkel Kessler next year. If Anhony Mundine did not have the motivation to do so, he would have probably given up. Motivation is a key factor to help someone to keep believing in themselves.

The article about Anthony Mundine relates to our class discussions in many aspects. The article is about a 32 year old boxer who has lost almost all his vision in on eye by trying to clean a contact with his tounge. This man relates to our class discussions because we've been dealing alot with our senses, and perception on life, and the idea that just cause you are blind or def doesn't mean you cant do certain things. He relates to helen keller in some ways because he still boxes with only one eye, and helen learns about thing without hearing or seeing. Anthony even states " don't need two eyes to beat them" This represents pure determination, and thats what are class discussions have been about.

The article about Anthony Mundine relates to our discussion about Helen Keller greatly. Anthony Mundine is not letting his partial blindness stop him from doing what he really wants. He is acting the same way as Helen was by not letting this get in his way. The way Helen is trying to learn about things all the time Anthony is trying to stay in top physical shape to beat his opponent. They are very alike in the fact that neither of them want to give up on what they want to do and how much they want to perservier.

This article relates to our class discussions in many different ways. One way that this article relates to what we talk about in class is that although Mundine is not completely blind, he still has many obstacles that he has to over come just as Helen has to. One obstacle the both have to overcome is for them both to prove themselves, and show that they are able to fully function in the world without people helping them at all times. It also relates to our class discussions because we talk about how Helen’s father and brother don’t think that she will be able to do all of this. She shows them by being able to read and write in brail. These to are related because Mundine and Helen both show that they can function and do things that everyone else can do.

In class we talked about blindness, and if it was worse to be born blind, or to become blind. The class decided that it would be worse to become blind because a person who was able to see things, would no longer be able to do so. In the article, Mundine becomes blind after using his tounge to clean a contact lens. Even though he isn't able to see great, he is determined to become what he always wanted. He was still willing to fight regardless of his handicap. "All I need is for my eye to be about 60 per cent. If i can see a silhouette under them lights in my left eye, I feel that I can still become what I have always desired." He would not let his handicap bring him down.

Anthony Mundine is a perfect example of how being handicapped cant hold you back if you don't let it. although he is blind he doesn't let it effect his passion for fighting. he continues to prove he can still do it. The discussion in calss portrays to this, in that blindness or being handicapped can only hold you back if you let it. if some one wants to be the best they can, by learning, understanding, or even fighting that nothing can hold them back. if its there passion nothing can stand in the way.
