I believe that the biggest hypocrite in the short story, "The Life You Save May be Your Own," by Flannery O'Conner is definitly Mrs.Crater. From the very beginning when she is talking to Mr. Shiftlet, she states "...and she's the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth." Soon after that, she decides to convince Mr. Shiftlet to marry her daughter who was a lot older then Mrs. Crater had stated. "Fifteen, sixteen, the old woman said. The girl was nearly thirty but because of her innocence it was impossible to guess." The mother made it seem like she cared about her daughter over anything else in the world and that she would never let anyone take her away. When truely, the mother was trying to get a man she didnt even know to marry her. This proves that Mrs. Crater didnt care about her daughter Lucynell at all. It almost seemed as if Lucynell was a burden that the mother wanted to put on someone else. Both Mr. Shiftlet and Mrs. Crater are hypocrites in this short story, but I think the largest hypocrite is Mrs. Crater.
In the short story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," by Flannery O'Connor, the biggest hypocrite would most definitely be Mrs. Crater. From when she first started talking to Mr. Shiftlet about her daughter, she said, "and she's the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth. She's smart too. She can sweep the floor, cook, wash, feed the chickens, and hoe. I wouldn't give her up for a casket of jewels." Everything she said was a complete lie. She was just trying to make her daughter look "good" in order for Mr. Shiftlet to like her. As the story stated, "She was ravenous for a son‑in‑law." Mrs. Crater felt that if she could get this man to marry her daughter, she wouldn’t have to take care of her anymore. It would be a huge weight lifted from her shoulders. This proves how careless Mrs. Crater was towards her daughter. She was willing to do anything to get Lucynell off her hands and out of her life. Mrs. Crater found Lucynell to be so much of a hassle to take care of that she allowed some random guy she didn’t even know to marry her daughter. Ultimately, both Mrs. Crater and Mr. Shiftlet were hypocrites in the short story, but Mrs. Crater was obviously a bigger one being that she said she loved her daughter, but then didn’t even care about who she got married to.
In the short story, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, by far Mr. Shiftlet is the bigger hypocrite then Mrs. Crater. Through out the whole story, he showed signs of being a religious man with the mindset to do right to the World. “He swung both his whole and his short arm up slowly so that they indicated an expanse of sky and his figure formed a crooked cross.” This not only foreshadows him as being a religious man, but also reflects on the women’s trust with him. In the story, he argues with Mrs. Crater that money doesn’t mean anything to him, but then later he wants money to go off for weekend. It seems he can’t make up his mind or is just a complete liar and hypocrite. At the end of the story he raises his arms and prays, “Oh Lord! Break forth and wash the slime from this earth!” I can’t see at all how someone like this could say this after he just completely screwed over Mrs. Crater. First off he took the only thing that gave her meaning, her daughter and if that wasn’t enough, he stole the car as well. If he wanted to get rid of the badness in the world, he could have at least driven the daughter home when he had the chance. It seems he knows he is doing wrong, but through out the story talks against it. This is a sign of a true hypocrite. He may try and show that he is a religious man, but he truly isn’t at all Mrs. Crater may lie about her daughter’s age and explain she’ll never let her go, but I can see her reasoning. The mother did all this because she wanted happiness for her daughter and the only way to achieve that was give in to some of the Mr. Shiftlet’s needs. She may be a small hypocrite, but no where near that of Mr. Shiftlet.
I would say that the bigger hypocrite is Mr.shiflet even though both Mrs.Crater and Mr.Shiflet were hypocrites. When Mr.Shiftlet first meets Mrs.Crater he goes on to say how nothing is how it used to be and no men are gentlemen anymore. Nobody keeps to their word and everyone should be treated properly. He even does so much to teach Lucynell how to say bird, when shes never in her life had spoken. He treated her like a normal person not a disabled girl."...Im a man,he said...I got...a moral intelligence!" Then he goes and leaves her in a diner never to return. This shows just how not manly he is by not caring that he just left his disabled wife in a diner. He tells how everybody in this world are bad people who dont know how to act civil. He states,"Breakfortth and wash the slime from this earth!" When really he is the slime of the earth which should be washed away. That is why later while he is driving away it starts to rain. This signifies him being washed away because he is the slime of the earth.
I think the bigger hypocrite in “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” is Tom Shiftlet. In the beginning of the story, he makes himself out to be this man who does not like material things, who appreciates the way he feels more than the things he receives from life. “’Lady,’ he said slowly, ‘there’s some men that some things mean more to them than money.’” (10) Reading this quote, one would thing Mr. Shiftlet is an honest, non materialistic man who is going door to door looking for something to do and somewhere to eat and sleep. Well, this woman, Lucynell Crater wanted him to marry her mentally handicapped daughter, and he agreed to do so. It might seem like this was a very kind thing to do, but he takes the girl to a diner to eat where she falls asleep, and he drives away in the car he fixed for Lucynell. Leaving and unstable girl in the middle of nowhere in a strange diner completely contradicts what he told Lucynell he was like. Driving away, he ponders about why the world is so evil, and why the rain that is pouring down cannot wash away all of the evil things. “Mr. Shiftlet felt that the rottenness of the world was about to engulf him.” (17) Why would Mr. Shiftlet want all the rottenness of the world to go away, when that would mean that he would be washed away as well?
In the short story, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” the bigger hypocrite is Mrs. Crater. This is proven true throughout the entire story; Mrs. Crater is constantly talking about how she would never give her only daughter up. She tells Mr. Shiftlet, “She’s the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn’t give her up for nothing on earth.” This quote clearly shows that she is a big hypocrite because later on in the story she tells Mr. Shiftlet “You want you an innocent woman, don’t you…you don’t want you none of this trash.” When Mrs. Crater states this she is trying to convince Mr. Shiftlet into marrying her daughter, when early in the story she was saying that she would never give her only daughter up. This does show that Mrs. Crater is a hypocrite, however, this does not make her an entirely bad person. She is looking for a man to take care of her daughter, and to be around the house all the time.
In this short story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" I believe the bigger hypocrite was Mrs. Crater. In the beginning of the story when Mr. Shiftlet arrived on her property, she talked about her daughter. Mrs. Crater clearly states, "and she's the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth. She's smart too...I wouldn't give her up for a casket of jewels." That is one of the biggest lies she can say, because she gives up her daughter for about fifthteen dollars, for her marriage to Mr. Shiftlet. That was the only thing she lied about. Mr. Shiftlet asked about Lucynell's age and Mrs. Crater stated, "Fifthteen, sixteen," but really she was thirty years old. Mrs. Crater also said that if a man came and wanted to marry her daughter and stay there at the house that she would say, "Mister, I don't blame you none. I wouldn't pass up a chance to live in a permanent place and get the sweetest girl in the world myself." As a mother, why would she say one thing of how she would never let go of her daughter, but she does give her away in a matter of minutes. That is a hypocrite right there.
In the short story “the life you save may be your own” there are many hypocritical moments. To me the most hypocritical person could be Mr. Shiftlet. He could be seen as a hypocrite in many instances. He come to be first shone as a man that knows what he wants and is also very holly. “He swung both his whole and his short arm up slowly so that they indicated an expansion of sky and his figure formed a crooked cross.” With this he is showing how he is supposed to be a very religious man that has a lot coming to him. He is a man that says that money means nothing. He is saying that he is a man that would rather have values than money. With this he is wanting money to go out and other things. He is trying to show that he is a none materialistic man but that could be disproven when he first meets Mrs. Crater by saying “you ladies drive.” He is trying to get a car out of the whole deal and ends up taking it while leaving the child behind.
In the short story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" by Flannery O’Connor, both Mrs. Crater and Mr. Shiftlet are hypocrites. The biggest hypocrite is Mrs. Crater. In the beginning of the story, Mrs. Crater is talking about how Lucynell is "...the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth." This makes the reader think that Mrs. Crater really cares about her daughter and will do anything to keep Lucynell by her side. Later on in the story, Mrs. Crater convinces Mr. Shiftlet, a man she barely knew, to marry her daughter. The only way Mr. Shiftlet would marry Lucynell was if he was able to take her on a proper "honeymoon." Mrs. Crater agrees to let Mr. Shiftlet take Lucynell. Mr. Shiftlet wanted money for the trip so Mrs. Crater says, "I'll give you fifteen dollars for a week‑end trip." Mr. Shiftlet argued that fifteen dollars wasn't enough money so Mrs. Crater agreed upon $17.50. Mrs. Crater is a hypocrite because she lets Lucynell go with Mr. Shiftlet even though she said that she never wanted to give her up.
In the short story "The Life you Save May Be Your Own," Mrs. Crater is the biggest hypocrite. In the story she tells Mr. Shifltlet that she would never give up her daughter to any man. Shortly after she says convinces Mr.Shiflet to marry her daughter. Mrs.Crater is hypocritical because she wants some man she hardly even knows to marry her daughter, when she just said she wouldn’t let any man take her daughter. Her Daughter (Lucynell)meant nothing to Mrs. Crater. I think that Mrs. Crater thought of her as a nuisance, and wanted someone to take her. This can be related to how Vernon’s mother always spoke like she cared about him to others, but she really didn’t care. Mrs. Crater is even more of a hypocrite than Mr. Shiftlet.
In the short story “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” by Flannery O’Connor Mrs. Carter is a bigger hypocrite compared to Mr. Shiftlet. Mrs. Carter is a bigger hypocrite for several reasons. One reason that sticks out is that when she said her daughter, Lucynell, would never leave her and would always stay at home with her. “… she’s the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn’t give her up for nothing on earth.” Near the end of the story she lets Lucynell go out with Mr. Shiftlet after saying that she wouldn’t give her up for the earth. Mrs. Crater wanted Mr. Shiftlet to marry her and she was organizing it and everything. “On Saturday the three of them drove into town in the car that the paint had barely dried on and Mr. Shiftlet and Lucynell were married in the Ordinary’s office while the old woman witnessed.” This shows how Mrs. Crater is the biggest hypocrite because at the beginning of the story she was saying how her daughter was hers and she would never leave her but now she arranged her marriage and wanted her to get married.
In the short story, " The life you save may be your own", by Flannery O'Conner i believe Mrs. Crater is the biggest hypocrite. One example that shows how much of a hypocrite is in the beginning of the short story when she is saying how sweet her daughter was "And she's the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on earth. She's smart too.". Later on we find out how much of a lie this is because she makes Mr. Shiftlet marry her daughter. It also states in the story "She was ravenous for a son‑in‑law." so that could be just to make her daughter appetizing for boys to marry her. Mrs crater is not only a hypocrite but a bad person to because she is trying to get rid of her daughter because she feels it too much work taking care of her. Mr. Shirftlet isn't the worse person here because of what he did to Mrs. craters daughter because she wanted her out, and as a result of that she was left in the dinner. Im not saying Mr shiftlet is a good man but it was mostly Mrs craters fault.
In "The Life You Save May be Your Own" by Flannery O'Conner, the biggest hypocrite is mrs Crater. She used her daughter as a way to look better for Mr. Shiftlet. She told him how smart she was and how good she was at cleaning and cooking, but all along she knew the truth. Mrs. Crater saw Mr. Shiftlet as a way to relieve herself of the burden her daughter placed on her. If Mrs. Crater was so unwilling to let her daughter go, why did was she so ready to let her marry Mr. Shiftlet? Mrs. Crater manipulated both her daughter and Mr. Shiftlet to better her own situation. Mrs. Crater's actions prove that she is a hypocrite throughout the story.
I believe that in the story, "The Life You Save May be Your Own," by Flannery O'Conner the biggest hypocrite was without a doubt Mrs. Crater. At the start of the short story she says to Mr. Shiftlet, "she's the sweetest girl in the world. I wouldn't give her up for nothing on this earth." No sooner did she say that, Mrs. Crater began to describe her daughter as if she was trying to sell her. She had said that her daughter can do all of this work around the house and never complain about it. Her description sounded almost like a sales pitch to attract Mr. Shiftlet. So after Mrs. Crater tells Mr. Shiftlet that she would not give her up for anything, she looks on at the two of them together from a window," secretly pleased. She was ravenous for a son-in-law." Her true feelings are completely contradictory to what she has said to Mr. Shiftlet and to what her true intentions are set on. Her true intentions are to get her daughter a husband and be freed of a burden.
